How will you give back?

21 Nov

The holidays are upon us!  For some families it is a holiday tradition to give back in some way.  Maybe they participate in a local sharing tree or give to Toys for Tots.  Others take the opportunity to clear out old toys or clothes to donate or take a day to volunteer.

If you have a tradition of volunteering or giving back during the holiday season, what do you do?  If you don’t already have a tradition, The Blogunteer encourages you to find an organization to support.  Your support could be as simple as a monetary donation or more involved by taking time to volunteer.

Use either the search option or the tags on the right side of the blog to search for opportunities that interest you on The Blogunteer or use Google to search for an opportunity that meets your interests.  Post in the comments about your volunteering or giving back!

Thanks for reminding me that I have stashed Toys for Tots in my closet! Also, my town’s youth services group has a holiday giving program and I am sponsoring two kids.

My family is getting into gifting each other for a good cause. Kiva cards have been passed around, for example. A good friend of the family volunteers at a soup kitchen run by her church – so we are gifting her with as many hats and scarves as we can knit and crochet between now and Christmas. (This happens to be a great way to use extra yarn from Project Linus blankets, too!)

Finally, I generally foster an extra bird from the parrot rescue where I volunteer. It is nice for the parrot to get some extra attention and nice for volunteers to have one less cage to clean at the shelter.

We have a tradition of caroling each holiday season! It’s the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association 100th Anniverisary – that’s 100 years of going out into neighborhoods and St. Louis communities and spreading Christmas cheer. Our listeners donate money and we use those funds to support over 40 local non-profit children’s agencies. Caroling and fundraising all in one night!

Caroling is timeless and a great tradition to start with friends and family. Gather a group – large or small – and head out into your neighborhoods! We are looking forward to our 100th year, a great holiday season, and encourag everyone – no matter where you are located – to go out and sing this holiday season.
